Whether you’re a new driver who doesn’t know much about vehicle maintenance or a seasoned driver just curious about the necessity of a regular expense you pay for, we understand why you’d wonder why oil changes are needed.
You should get your oil changed regularly. Convention says you should change your oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. Now there are a variety of oils that say you can go longer than that between oil changes, and some vehicle makes and models have different requirements. Check your owner’s manual to see what maintenance schedule is recommended for you. You can ask a trusted mechanic (like us!) to see if your brand of oil changes anything, too.
Oil is pumped through your car or truck’s engine, keeping the parts lubricated as the rub together so they don’t wear out as quickly. It also cleans and traps sediment and soot from your engine. As the oil gets older and dirtier, it’s less effective at keeping the engine parts lubricated. If you check your car’s oil before and after an oil change, you’ll see a color change. It’s darker, like sludge, before an oil change because of all that grime it has trapped.
Changing your oil is how you get that out of your car’s system. During an oil change, your current oil is drained out and new oil is put in. That new oil is clean, fresh, and will keep your engine healthy and running longer.
